About Reining & AzRHA

ABOUT REINING

From days long ago when cowboys would casually compete with each other to determine whose horse was a better, more willing partner, the sport of reining has grown into a multi-million dollar industry made up of over 15,000 competitors nationwide. With the working ranch horse being an icon of American culture, reining attracts individuals seeking to be part of that rich heritage and build a deep, trusting relationship with their horses.

Reining is a judged event requiring competitors to complete one of ten approved patterns in an arena. Trademarks of these patterns include large and small circles of various speeds, flying lead changes, 360 degree spins in place, roll backs, and sliding stops.

Judging is based on an addition/deduction basis for degree of difficulty and the ease and finesse with which each maneuver is completed. Ideally, the competitor is able to complete each maneuver with apparent effortlessness and demonstrate command of their horse with the lightest touch possible.
